Finding Calm Through Creativity: A Coloring Journal for Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling many people experience at some point in their lives. It can be overwhelming and make daily tasks seem impossible. I know this because I’ve been there. I used to work in a high-pressure banking job where I faced enormous challenges and expectations. These demands, combined with a struggling economy marked by high inflation and interest rates, led to immense stress and anxiety. The goals I was tasked with achieving often felt unattainable, and the pressure weighed heavily on me. My team and I sometimes joked about the absurdity of our targets, but deep down, it was no laughing matter. Anxiety became a constant companion during this time.

Through my journey, I learned that focusing on something outside of work and my stressors was a powerful way to manage my anxiety. That’s what inspired me to create this coloring journal. I wanted to provide others with a simple, creative outlet to help them find peace during anxious moments. This journal is for anyone who needs a break from their thoughts, a moment to breathe, and a way to redirect their energy toward something positive.

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural response to stress. It’s that uneasy feeling in your chest, the racing thoughts, and sometimes even a sense of panic. For some, it’s a passing moment, but for others, it can linger and interfere with life. Anxiety can be triggered by various factors like work pressure, financial worries, personal relationships, or even health concerns. It’s important to know that anxiety is not a sign of weakness. It’s your body’s way of responding to challenges and uncertainties.

When I was working in the bank, the constant demands and high expectations triggered my anxiety. I felt like I was on a treadmill that kept speeding up, and I couldn’t get off. I didn’t realize how much this was affecting my mental and physical health until it became unbearable. My anxiety made it hard to focus, sleep, and even enjoy the little things in life. But it also pushed me to find ways to cope and heal.

How Coloring Helped Me

One of the most effective ways I found to manage my anxiety was through creative activities. I started coloring as a way to distract my mind from the stress of work. At first, it seemed too simple to make a difference. But as I picked up the colored pencils and began filling in patterns and shapes, I noticed a shift in my mood. My racing thoughts slowed down, and I felt a sense of calm. The repetitive motion of coloring and the focus it required gave my mind a much-needed break.

Coloring allowed me to be present in the moment. Instead of worrying about tomorrow’s targets or dwelling on past mistakes, I was immersed in choosing colors and creating something beautiful. It was a small but significant step toward regaining control over my thoughts and emotions.

Why I Created This Coloring Journal

I know I’m not alone in experiencing anxiety. Many people face similar struggles, whether it’s due to work, personal challenges, or the uncertainties of life. That’s why I decided to create this coloring journal. I wanted to share a tool that helped me and might help you too.

This journal is designed to be more than just a collection of coloring pages. It’s a space for you to relax, reflect, and recharge. The patterns and illustrations are carefully chosen to be soothing and engaging. Whether you’re new to coloring or have been doing it for years, this journal is for everyone.

In addition to coloring pages, the journal includes simple prompts and affirmations to guide you toward positivity and self-compassion. For example, you might find a page that says, “Write down three things you’re grateful for today,” or “Color this page while thinking about something that brings you joy.” These small exercises are designed to help shift your focus and remind you of the good in your life.

How to Use This Journal

  1. Find a Quiet Space: Choose a comfortable spot where you can focus without distractions. This could be a cozy corner of your home, a park bench, or even your office during a break.

  2. Gather Your Supplies: You don’t need fancy tools to get started. Grab some colored pencils, markers, or crayons—whatever you have on hand.

  3. Start Coloring: Pick a page that speaks to you and start coloring. There’s no right or wrong way to do this. Use the colors that make you happy, and don’t worry about staying inside the lines.

  4. Take Your Time: There’s no rush. Enjoy the process and let yourself be fully present in the moment.

  5. Reflect: Use the prompts in the journal to write down your thoughts or feelings. This can help you process your emotions and gain clarity.

  6. Make It a Habit: Set aside a few minutes each day to use the journal. It doesn’t have to be long—even five minutes can make a difference.
