The Philippines is a country full of natural beauty. With white sand beaches, rich natural resources, smiling people, and a deep love for family and faith, it looks like a paradise. But behind the beauty lies a heavy burden—poverty, corruption, spiritual confusion, and suffering. Many ask the question: “Why is the Philippines still so poor even though it’s a Christian country?” Some say it is a blessed nation, but others, like me, wonder if it’s also a cursed one.
A Nation That Calls Itself Christian… But Is It Truly?
The Philippines is known as the only predominantly Christian nation in Asia. Almost 90% of the population identifies as Christian, mostly Roman Catholic. People go to church, pray, and celebrate religious festivals. But while Jesus is mentioned with their lips, other gods are worshiped inside their homes and hearts.
It is common to see Chinese Buddha statues in Filipino houses and businesses. People believe that these statues will bring “good luck,” “prosperity,” or “good energy.” Some also put coins, charms, and incense around them. They say they’re just “decoration” or “tradition,” but in truth, these are forms of idolatry.
Exodus 20:3-5 (KJV) says:
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image… Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them.”
God is clear—He wants to be worshiped alone. Mixing Jesus with false gods is not worship; it’s rebellion. You cannot worship Jesus and Buddha at the same time. You cannot place your hope in both God and lucky charms. That is spiritual adultery.
Idolatry Brings Confusion and Curse
Because of this spiritual confusion, I believe the Philippines is not fully walking in God’s blessing. The Bible teaches that obedience to God brings blessing, but disobedience brings curse.
Deuteronomy 28:15 (KJV):
“But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God… that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee.”
Many Filipinos claim to follow Jesus but still practice superstitions. They bless their businesses with idols, seek fortune through Feng Shui, and hold on to pagan beliefs. They honor saints more than Jesus. Even Mother Mary, who is honored in Scripture as the mother of Jesus, is being worshiped by some—prayed to as if she has power equal to God. This is not what the Bible teaches.
1 Timothy 2:5 (KJV):
“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
This spiritual confusion opens doors to curses. When a nation turns away from the true God, darkness increases.
The Signs of the Curse
You can see the signs of this curse in everyday life in the Philippines.
-
Poverty is everywhere. Slums are filled with families living in small, dirty homes without running water or electricity.
-
Many babies are born out of wedlock. Young people are having children without marriage, and many children grow up fatherless.
-
Education is lacking. Some children cannot afford to go to school or must drop out early to work and support their families.
-
Mothers sell themselves. Women turn to online relationships, hoping to be rescued by a foreigner so they can escape poverty.
-
Corruption is high. Even in politics and the church, money and power are often more important than truth and service.
These are signs of brokenness. And sadly, they are everywhere.
Hosea 4:6 (KJV):
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee.”
Without the true knowledge of God, a nation suffers—not just spiritually, but physically and economically too.
A Nation in Need of Repentance
But there is hope. God is merciful. If the Philippines turns back to the one true God, He can heal the land.
2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV):
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
The Philippines needs revival—a return to the Bible, to truth, and to Jesus Christ alone. Not Jesus plus Buddha. Not Jesus plus luck. Just Jesus.
There must be a repentance in families, schools, and churches. Idols must be thrown away. People must choose to follow Jesus with a pure heart. Only then can the land be free from the spiritual chains that hold it down.
The Philippines Is Beautiful—But It Needs Deliverance
The beauty of the Philippines is real. But so is the pain. It is heartbreaking to see people suffer, not just from lack of money, but from lack of truth.
Jesus wants to bless the Philippines. But blessings come when a nation honors Him fully.
Galatians 6:7 (KJV):
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
Right now, the Philippines is reaping confusion, poverty, and brokenness—because it has sown idolatry, disobedience, and compromise.
It’s time to come back to the real God. To remove the idols. To stop pretending. To be a Christian nation in more than just name.
Final Words
Philippines is a land full of potential, but it is being held back by spiritual chains. We cannot be afraid to speak the truth.
Let us pray for the Philippines to wake up, repent, and return to Jesus. Let us pray for the idols to fall and for revival to come. Only then will the Philippines truly be blessed.
Psalm 33:12 (KJV):
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.”
