There Are No U-Hauls Following Your Hearse: A Biblical Reminder to Stop Stressing and Enjoy God’s Blessing

I was reading the book of Ecclesiastes the other day, and once again, I was reminded of how true and simple God’s Word is. It speaks straight to the heart, especially when it talks about the meaning of life. One verse that stood out to me says, “Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb, and as everyone comes, so they depart. They take nothing from their toil that they can carry in their hands.”Ecclesiastes 5:15 (NIV).

This verse reminds us that no matter how much we work, buy, or collect, we cannot take anything with us when we die. I like to say, “There are no U-Hauls following your hearse.” When your time on earth is done, all your possessions stay behind — your money, your house, your car, your designer clothes, and all those things you worked so hard to buy. They mean nothing in eternity.

In my 20+ years working in the banking world, I’ve seen it all. I’ve met people pretending to be rich — they drive fancy cars, wear brand names, and post about their “perfect” lives. But behind those smiles and photos, many of them are buried in debt. They live paycheck to paycheck, always chasing the next thing that will make them feel better.

I’ve also met truly rich people with more money than they could ever spend, yet they are miserable. They have beautiful homes, but no peace. They take expensive vacations, but still feel empty inside. Just as the Bible says in Ecclesiastes 1:9, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” The same story repeats through generations — people working hard, worrying too much, and missing the true purpose of life.

I’ve walked into homes filled with so many things that there’s no space to move. Closets overflowing, kitchens full of gadgets never used, and garages so packed with boxes that the cars are parked outside. A garage is meant for cars, not for storing stuff that collects dust. Yet people keep buying more — trying to fill an emptiness that only God can fill.

I’ve also seen people chasing happiness through brand names — expensive shoes, designer bags, and the latest phone — believing those things make them valuable. But deep down, they are often stressed, tired, and broke. That’s not what God wants for us. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:12-13, “I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.”

So, my message is simple: stop stressing out about your life. Stop comparing yourself to others or buying things to impress people who don’t care. Enjoy the blessings God has given you. Eat, laugh, love, and be thankful. Appreciate your lot in life — it’s already been assigned to you by God.

When you die, your possessions stay behind. There will be no U-Haul following your hearse. But your faith, your kindness, and the way you treated others — those are the treasures that matter forever.
