As a former banker working for a major bank in the country, I have observed people for many years and how they handle their money. One thing I noticed is that no matter how much money they make, it never seems to be enough. Many people struggle with their finances, living paycheck to paycheck, even when they earn a good income. The problem is not always how much they make but how they spend it.
Money is a tool, and how we use it reveals a lot about our hearts. Many people prioritize spending on things that do not last—expensive clothes, the latest gadgets, luxury vacations—without considering how they are managing their resources in a way that pleases God.
Money as a Test of the Heart
God uses money to test our sincerity and faithfulness. He is not against wealth, but He looks at how we handle what He has given us. Are we being wise with it? Are we helping others? Are we honoring Him with our finances?
Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV):
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Many people live as though money is their security, but the Bible warns us not to put our trust in wealth. Instead, we should focus on storing treasures in heaven through acts of generosity, kindness, and faithfulness.
Why Are So Many People Struggling Financially?
In my years as a banker, I have seen how people struggle with financial decisions. I have looked at their financial statements and noticed that most of their money goes into material things instead of savings, investments, or helping others.
Here are some common reasons why people struggle with money:
Living Beyond Their Means – Many people spend more than they earn. Credit cards and loans make it easy to live a lifestyle they cannot afford, leading to debt and financial stress.
Impulse Buying – People buy things on impulse without thinking if they really need them. Shopping gives them temporary happiness, but later, they regret it.
Not Having a Budget – Without a plan for their money, people tend to overspend and fail to save.
Neglecting God’s Principles on Giving – The Bible teaches about tithing and generosity, but many people hold on to their money tightly instead of trusting God to provide.
Fear of the Future – Some people hoard money out of fear instead of using it wisely for God’s purposes.
Biblical Principles for Managing Money Wisely
If you find yourself struggling financially, here are some Biblical principles that can help:
Put God First in Your Finances – Proverbs 3:9-10 (NIV) says: “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” When we put God first, He blesses our efforts.
Live Below Your Means – Avoid unnecessary expenses and focus on needs rather than wants.
Save and Invest Wisely – Proverbs 21:20 (NIV) says: “The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.” It is wise to save for the future instead of spending everything now.
Give to Others – Proverbs 11:25 (NIV) says: “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” God blesses those who give with a cheerful heart.
Avoid Debt – Romans 13:8 (NIV) says: “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another.” While some debts (like a home mortgage) can be necessary, unnecessary consumer debt can be dangerous.
Be Content – Hebrews 13:5 (NIV) says: “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” Contentment helps us appreciate what we have and reduces financial stress.
How to Take Control of Your Finances
If you feel like money is controlling you instead of you controlling it, now is the time to change. Here are practical steps to help you regain control:
Create a Budget – A budget helps you track income and expenses. It also helps you prioritize your spending.
Start Saving – Even if you start small, saving consistently will help you build financial security.
Give Generously – Make giving a priority. Trust God with your finances.
Pay Off Debt – List all your debts and create a plan to pay them off.
Pray for Wisdom – Ask God for guidance in managing your money wisely.
A Tool to Help You Manage Your Money
Many people feel overwhelmed when they try to manage their finances. That is why I created a budget journal to help you plan, track, and improve your financial situation.
If you are struggling with your finances and want to be a better steward of the money God has given you, I recommend getting my budget journal, available on Amazon. This journal is designed to help you:

By using this journal, you can take control of your money and start honoring God with your finances.
Final Thoughts
Money is not evil, but the love of money is dangerous (1 Timothy 6:10). It is a test from God to see how we handle what He has given us. Are we spending recklessly, or are we using our money to glorify Him?
If you are struggling financially, I encourage you to trust God with your money. Follow His principles, live within your means, and be generous. He will take care of you.
Remember what Jesus said in Luke 16:10 (NIV): “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”
Be faithful with what you have, and God will bless you abundantly.
