Why I Don’t Watch TV News Anymore: Protecting My Heart and Mind

There is a reason why I don’t watch TV news anymore. Every time I turn it on, it feels like the world is falling apart. The news is filled with stories about violence, sickness, death, and corruption. It’s always negative. Hardly anything good is ever shared. Watching it day after day makes me feel sad, anxious, and hopeless. That’s not how God wants me to live.

The truth is, TV news is depressing and dark. It affects people more than they realize. What we watch and hear goes into our hearts and minds. If we keep listening to negative stories, our minds become filled with fear and worry. No wonder so many people are sad, sick, and even thinking about ending their lives. I believe the media plays a big role in the pain we see around us today.

TV news is supposed to inform us. But many times, it feels like it’s doing the opposite. It’s scaring us. It’s dividing us. It’s making us angry. Instead of bringing hope, it brings confusion. Instead of helping us think clearly, it fills our minds with doubt and darkness. We were not created to live in constant fear. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV): “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” The news takes away that power and replaces it with fear.

Another problem is the constant advertisement of drugs on TV. Pharmaceutical companies spend millions of dollars every year to advertise pills and treatments. They make it sound like these drugs will solve all your problems. They show happy people, smiling and enjoying life, just because they took a certain pill. But many of these drugs have dangerous side effects. Some even lead to death. Yet these ads continue to flood the media.

Instead of encouraging people to eat healthy, get rest, or seek God’s peace, these ads push more and more chemicals into our bodies. No wonder our nation is so sick. We are being sold solutions that don’t really heal us. In some cases, they make us worse. The Bible reminds us in Psalm 118:8 (KJV): “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.” Many trust in doctors, pills, and the media more than they trust in God. That’s a dangerous path.

Social media is no better. Every time I scroll, I see pictures of people living what looks like a perfect life. Big mansions, luxury cars, vacations in beautiful places, and piles of money. It seems like everyone is rich, happy, and living their best life. But that’s not true. Most of it is fake. People post the good parts of their life, but hide the bad. Behind those smiles, many are depressed, lonely, and empty.

The pressure to keep up with what we see online is hurting many people. Some go into debt trying to look rich. Others feel like they are not good enough because they don’t have what others have. Some even feel worthless and want to give up. We are comparing our real lives to someone else’s highlight reel. That’s not fair, and it’s not healthy.
The Bible warns us not to love the things of this world. 1 John 2:15-17 (NLT) says, “Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.” God wants us to live simple, peaceful lives, not lives full of jealousy, competition, and lies. Social media often leads us away from God and toward pride and self-destruction.

I believe one of the reasons why many people are depressed, anxious, and even suicidal is because of what they are feeding their hearts and minds. TV news and social media are full of darkness. We need to be careful what we allow into our lives. Just like junk food can destroy our bodies, junk news and fake social media can destroy our souls.
We need to protect our hearts.

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” That means we must be careful about what we watch, what we listen to, and who we follow. If it brings fear, sadness, or confusion, it’s not from God.
Instead of watching depressing news, I choose to read the Bible, listen to uplifting music, and talk to people who encourage me. Instead of scrolling through fake lives online, I focus on the real blessings I have—my family, my pets, my faith, and my peace of mind. These things are worth more than all the riches shown on social media.

Jesus said in John 10:10 (NIV), “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” The thief can come through a TV screen or a phone screen. But Jesus came to give us peace, joy, and purpose. We need to focus on Him and not the noise around us.

In closing, I want to encourage anyone reading this: You don’t have to keep watching the news if it’s hurting you. You don’t have to keep comparing yourself to people online. You don’t need more stuff to be happy. What you need is God’s truth. His Word gives life. His Spirit gives peace. And His love heals every broken heart.
If you feel anxious, depressed, or hopeless, turn off the TV and open your Bible. If you feel like giving up, talk to God and tell Him everything. He is listening. He cares. You are not alone. The world is loud and dark, but God’s light is stronger.

Romans 12:2 (NIV) reminds us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” That’s why I don’t watch the news anymore. I want my mind renewed. I want peace, not fear. I want hope, not despair. I want truth, not lies. And only God can give me that.

What have you been watching or listening to lately?
